The keys to successful employee performance reviews

Performance reviews are an essential aspect of successful workforce management. According to Business & Legal Resources, employees perform better when they understand their roles and objectives than when they lack this knowledge.

The following are some tips that will improve your reviews so that your workforce can succeed in the long run.

Talk about achievements and failures
In sports, the best teams are the ones that learn from their wins and losses. For instance, the Chicago Blackhawks didn't win the 2013 Stanley Cup by only watching film of their best games . The squad had to see where it was successful and learn about its weaknesses.

This is the same approach that you should take with your employees. BLR points out that you should talk about successes and failures in reviews. Praise workers for their accomplishments and provide constructive criticism.

Establishing a positive, corporate culture contributes to employees morale. Most corporate cultures are established by the owner, C-level staff, and HR. It's key to foster respectful communication, positive attitudes, team building and open door policies with management.

Courtney Berg of CourtSide Consulting explained to Inc. Magazine that getting workers to respond positively is all about adhering to an enterprise's identity.

"For example, if an organization has an informal structure and hires employees who embody that philosophy, a formal and complicated appraisal process is less likely to be taken seriously," Berg said.

Give new expectations
HR Morning explains that you shouldn't just pat people on the back for great work. You should reward accomplishments, but you can't allow employees to walk away from reviews without giving them guidance on what you want from them moving forward.

That's why the news source recommends setting expectations for your staff members. If someone indicates that he or she wants a promotion, explain what benchmarks need to be met  for that worker to be given a new job. Transparency is essential for helping employees reach their potential, and you should provide as much direction as possible so they know you have their best interests at heart.
